A week ago today, my friend Ryan died. I had never lost a friend before. I wasn't sure what to say or think. I felt disoriented for days. I had to go to class, work and fulfill other duties, but it was like my ears were ringing from an M-80 that exploded too close to my head.

This semester has been a stressful one. Long hours and late nights have consumed my life, but I wouldn't trade the experience I gained. I've thought a lot about what I would write in my last column. My intention was always to address my last column as Editor in Chief to everyone I love, because I couldn't have survived this semester without them.

Way back during the Freshmen Orientation of 2004, I had the pleasure of hearing Professor Phil Laemmle's famous "Biscuit Speech." With plenty in America calling Barack Obama's comments elitist, maybe it is time the United States took a look in the mirror. Currently the saber-rattling and bellicose rhetoric emerges at a thunderous pace as Washington and the military amp up possible war with Iran.

Words usually flow freely to me. I can flex my vocabulary muscles on cue and rattle off 17 synonyms for the word depressed. On Tuesday night, all words escaped me. That's when SIUC senior Ryan Rendleman died in a car accident. Ryan was a friend to all his co-workers at the Daily Egyptian and an inspiration to us all.

With every end, there is a new beginning. Haunted by the surgical scars from two blown ACLs and the deep throbbing pain of a strained UCL in my elbow, my collegiate baseball career was left in shambles. For two years, I fought through the injuries, but in vain.
